I’m 42 years old, so I was well overdue of a screening mammogram, because of the same reasons lots of women wait to have this procedure, fear! or “I’ll do it soon” What I use to say and every time I would hear the word Breast Cancer or mammogram I would get nervous and decided to make an appointment but I wouldn’t, either because of fear of because I forgot. Last week I finally decided to make an appointment for my screening mammogram and today I did it and the experience was nothing like I thought it would be.
It was extremely easy and fast! I was in and out in less than 15 minutes, the screening mammogram was less than 10 minutes. When you enter, the technician explains to you that she will take 2 photos of each of your breasts and tells you to take off your clothes waist up.
The technologist positioned and compressed my breast between two clear plates. The plates are attached to a highly specialized camera, which takes two pictures of the breast from two directions. Then the technologist repeats the technique on the opposite breast. Mammography is not painful for most women, it wasn’t for me, it was just a bit uncomfortable, I mean who likes their breasts being compressed, but the feeling will only lasts for just a few seconds. After the technologist took 4 pictures of my breasts she told me to wait 5 minutes (I only waited around 2 minutes) and she told me the pictures were clear and I could go, that was it! Of course now I have to wait for the results which my doctor will get in a few days because technicians can’t comment about results, so YES! I’m nervous although I think everything is fine, but I’m relief I had my screening mammogram done because that thought of not knowing if anything is wrong was killing me! I would wake up at night thinking, “What if I have breast cancer, what’s going to happen to my kids!” I would make a promise of making an appointment as soon as I woke up, but I never did! Sounds familiar? Don’t wait anymore! Take the phone right now and make an appointment for your screening mammogram, that simple phone call can save your life! Mammograms don’t prevent breast cancer, but they can save lives by finding breast cancer as early as possible.
