Healthy Twists To Traditional Hispanic Recipes substitutes

The Holiday season is my favorite time of the year, I love the decorations, the music, the joyful atmosphere and of course the food! “It’s the most wonderful time of the year” But it’s also the hardest time of the year to eat healthy! Just the smell of a Christmas tree makes me want to bake cookies! Between Posadas and vacations it’s easy to overindulge during the Holidays, but it’s possible to avoid doing so if we choose healthy ingredients

Here are 5 healthy twists to use in traditional Hispanic Recipes

Applesauce instead of butter.

Applesauce can also be used as a butter alternative, and it works best in cake-like recipes. Replace half the amount of butter in your recipe with applesauce. If you prefer a denser, more moist bread, replace all the butter with applesauce to cut even more calories and fat.

Plain yogurt instead of mayonnaise.

Although yogurt is made entirely of milk, and that mayonnaise is made almost entirely of oil, it’s unsurprising that a tablespoon of mayo contains more fat than a full cup of yogurt. When you’re cooking this Holiday season, you can easily reduce its calorie and fat count by mixing some plain yogurt into the mayonnaise or substituting it entirely

Whole-wheat flour instead of white flour.

Replacing white flour with whole-wheat flour keeps the texture without the calories.

Skip the lard!

Lard is a main ingredient in tamales, but it’s also filled with fat! To lower the calories when making this traditional Hispanic recipe you can make the tamale dough or masa this way:

  • Mix 3-cups of maseca (instant tamale/tortilla mix) with 1 tsp baking powder and 1/2 tsp salt. Stir to combine.
  • In a different bowl, mix 1/2-cup yogurt into 2 1/2 cups of broth and stir them into the masa mix. You want to achieve a wet dough consistency– not quite cake batter, but not very thick as well.

Substitute carbs for vegetables

Bacalao is a traditional Hispanic recipe during the Holidays but it’s also filled with fat! But like any recipe you can substitute some ingredients to make a low calories dish but maintaining the flavor.

When making bacalao, use Atlantic Cod and skip the potatoes, almonds, raisins, this will dramatically lower the calories but the flavor will still be delicious!

These simple twists can be made in any dishes for a healthier version while maintaining the flavor, I encourage you to recreate your favorite Hispanic recipe that may be too high on calories with more natural/healthier ingredients trying the tips I provided.

Living a healthy lifestyle is easier than you think, by using healthy ingredients when cooking and portion control, especially for kids! When serving food to children, make it a balanced plate; protein, vegetables and carbs, this last being the smallest portion on the plate. We can enjoy all the food if we encourage portion control and healthy habits, such as:

  • Serve milk to children during breakfast and dinner, or however fits best into your lifestyle. You can even seek out low-fat or fat-free milk for your family.
  • Help your children be thoughtful about getting seconds. If your kids finish their meal and are still hungry, offer them more veggies, fruit or protein.
  • Switch the juice for water. Teach kids to drink water all day! Personally I don’t give my children any juice to drink at home, only on special occasions. Have bottles of water or a gallon of water handy, especially if they’re thirsty, teach them water is the only liquid that will satisfy their thirst.
